How to know if a laundry detergent is truly safe, or just greenwashing in the cleaning industry?

Eco-friendly packaging doesn’t guarantee a clean formula. Here’s how to spot greenwashing in laundry products and what to look for instead.

Walk down any cleaning aisle today and everything suddenly looks “eco-friendly.” Soft colors. Minimal packaging. Words like natural, green, clean, plant-based everywhere.

But here’s the truth: most of what you see is designed to look clean, not necessarily to be clean. And unfortunately, greenwashing in the cleaning industry is everywhere.

Greenwashing in the Cleaning Industry: The Laundry Sheet Example

Take laundry sheets, for example. They look minimal, modern, and environmentally friendly. Many brands market them as the future of sustainable laundry. But when you actually look at the formulas, the reality is often very different.

Many laundry sheets still rely heavily on synthetic chemistry and ingredients that are not truly biodegradable. That’s an important distinction because:

  • ›Dissolvable does NOT mean biodegradable
  • ›Minimal packaging does NOT mean the formula itself is safe

A product can disappear in water and still leave behind substances that are harmful to waterways, ecosystems, or even your skin.

Liquid Detergents Are Mostly Water

The same logic applies to many liquid detergents. Most liquid detergents are made of up to 80% water. And in regions like the UAE, where water is an extremely precious resource, transporting huge plastic bottles filled mostly with water simply makes very little environmental sense.

The Hidden Problem With Fragrances

One of the biggest red flags in a detergent formula is the word “fragrance” or “parfum.”

It sounds harmless, but in reality, fragrances are often made of complex blends of synthetic chemicals that brands are not legally required to fully disclose. Some can contain allergens, irritants, endocrine disruptors, or substances linked to respiratory sensitivities.

And ironically, we’ve been taught to associate a “strong clean smell” with cleanliness itself. But clean laundry should not need to smell aggressively artificial.

If a detergent leaves an overpowering scent on your clothes for days, it often means chemical residues are also staying behind on the fabric, in constant contact with your skin.

That’s especially concerning for babies, children, sensitive skin, or anyone trying to reduce their toxic load overall.

Beware of Optical Brighteners

Another ingredient category consumers rarely know about is optical brighteners.

These are synthetic chemicals added to make clothes appear whiter and brighter. They work by coating fabrics with fluorescent compounds that reflect blue light, creating the illusion of “ultra-clean” laundry.

But here’s the key thing: optical brighteners do not actually clean your clothes. They are purely cosmetic.

And because they are designed to stay on fabrics after washing, they can remain in prolonged contact with the skin. Some are also poorly biodegradable and problematic for aquatic environments.

In other words: your clothes may look brighter, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are healthier or cleaner.

So What Should You Look For Instead?

For me, the answer is simple: look at the formula.

A genuinely healthy and eco-conscious detergent should not need a long list of complicated ingredients nobody can pronounce.

At Because You Care, our formula is intentionally simple and fully transparent.

The BYC Formula

We use only three essential ingredients:

Vegetable-Based Soap

Coconut-based today. This is the actual cleaning agent, the surfactant that lifts dirt and cleans fabrics effectively.

Bicarbonate

Bicarbonate helps neutralize odors while gently softening laundry.

Washing Soda

Washing soda breaks down grease and boosts cleaning power naturally.

And that’s it. Each ingredient has a clear role. Nothing unnecessary.

  • ›No hidden fragrance blends
  • ›No optical brighteners
  • ›No ingredients added just for marketing

Because creating an effective detergent is really about balance:

  • ›Bicarbonate = gentleness
  • ›Washing soda = power
  • ›Soap = cleaning

That balance matters more than trendy packaging or buzzwords.

Today, consumers are becoming more aware of what they eat, apply on their skin, and bring into their homes. I believe laundry detergent should be part of that conversation too, especially because detergent residues stay in contact with our skin every single day through our clothes, sheets, towels, and children’s pajamas.

So the next time you shop for a detergent, don’t just ask yourself:

“Does this product look eco-friendly?”

Ask instead:

“Do I actually understand what’s inside?”

Because transparency should never be a luxury.
